The Sacred Heart Community is blessed with many talented musicians and vocalists who share their gift of music with the congregation throughout the liturgical year. Liturgical music allows the congregation and community to participate actively in the liturgy, relating to both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The music ministry at Sacred Heart welcomes and invites anyone with a love of music and a desire to worship in song to join one or more of our many liturgical music ensembles. We welcome singers and instrumentalists of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels to come and experience the joy of making music in praise of our God. We love seeing new faces and welcoming them into our musical family.
Cantor
The overall goal of the cantor is to guide the congregation in worship. The secondary goal is to be a good example of worshiping through song. Especially during the singing of the Psalms, a cantor remains prayerful and dedicated to delivering the liturgy properly.
The cantor is required to sing solo during a few parts of the Mass, so you should be comfortable with this if you want to volunteer as a cantor. The Music Director or others in the Parish can assist you if you would like to cantor but feel you need some guidance.
Liturgical Choir
The choir's mission is to serve the liturgy by promoting congregational participation and fostering prayer among the faithful. The choir is devoted to the study, rehearsal, and singing of choral literature from all periods, styles, and cultures in the context of the Roman Catholic Liturgical tradition. You do not need to read music to be part of the choir.
The choir meets on Wednesday evenings to rehearse the music for the weekend and upcoming church holidays. Rehearsals alternate each week between Sacred Heart and St. Cyprian in Riverview. They also gather before Mass for a short rehearsal. The choir typically sings at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday.
Instrumentalists
If you are proficient with piano, guitar, flute, violin, percussion or any type of instrument that will blend well with Liturgical music, we encourage you to lend your talents to our weekend liturgies.
Bell Choir
The Bell Choir is a group of individuals that ring recognizable music with melodies and harmony. The hand bells are typically arranged chromatically on foam-covered tables. Unlike an orchestra or choir in which each musician is responsible for one line of the texture, a handbell ensemble acts as one instrument with each musician responsible for particular notes, sounding his or her assigned bells whenever those notes appear in the music.
The Bell Choir will typically be in session from October to December and March to May each year. The ability to read music is a must for the handbells and commitment to rehearsal attendance.
